What Have We Learned?

Two things. First, different industries have different requirements when it comes to resumes.

I know lots of owners of Executive Search firms in other industries. When we get together, we invariably complain about the fact that most people don't send us resumes that we can use, therefore the resumes just get thrown in the files and forgotten.( People can get forgotten just as easily in computers as file drawers.)

Why? Because 80% of the people send us resumes like those described above and they don't work.

When I talk to owners of Search firms in other industries we all talk about the same thing. There is a specific resume format and style of presentation that works best for their particular industry. The job applicants that have figured it out get the lions share of job interviews and job offers. We have all known people that "seem" to have new career opportunities dropped in their lap all the time. Did you ever think that maybe they knew something you didn't know? That they were presenting their career accomplishments in a different way? Or did you just chalk it up to their being "lucky"?

Second, we have identified an excellent format that works effectively in the hotel industry.

Each quarter we study the resumes of candidates who have had interviews and job offers to see what they are doing differently than their peers. This information is included in the Securemploy Career Empowerment Kit. We know what clients in the hotel industry like to see. Will the same format work in any other industry? We don't know. Our expertise is in the hotel industry.
